Yesterday, 8th March 2015, was International Women’s Day.
Around the world people celebrate the economic, political and social achievements of women past, present and future. IWD has been celebrated since the 1911 in Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland. Over one million women and men took part in rallies campaigning for women’s rights, including the right to work, vote, be trained, to hold public office and end discrimination.
IWD is a holiday in Afghanistan, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Burkina Faso, Cambodia, China (for women only), Cuba, Georgia, Guinea-Bissau, Eritrea, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Laos, Madagascar (for women only), Moldova, Mongolia, Montenegro, Nepal (for women only), Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uganda, Ukraine, Uzbekistan, Vietnam and Zambia.
Men in these countries honour their female family, friends and colleagues and in some traditions this day has a similar status to Mother’s Day and sees children giving presents to their mothers and grandmothers.
