Windrush Round Table Meeting with the Home Secretary

An important round table meeting scheduled for Thursday 24th of October at 2pm, with Home Secretary Yvette Cooper and Seema Malhotra, to discuss critical issues concerning Windrush. This is a key opportunity to ensure our voices are heard and to influence future decisions, particularly regarding the newly proposed Windrush Commissioner.

Agenda Points:

  1. Collaboration with the Windrush Commissioner: How do you envision working with the Commissioner to address the community’s needs?
  2. Addressing Pressing Issues: In what specific ways should the Commissioner address the most pressing issues faced by the Windrush community?
  3. Reconciliation Events: Do you believe reconciliation events would still be welcomed and beneficial to the Windrush community?
  4. Effective Community Engagement: Can you share any past examples where community engagement was particularly effective, and what made those efforts successful?
  5. Communication Channels: What are the most effective ways to engage with the Windrush community?

With the 3rd Annual Windrush International Conference taking place in Birmingham this Friday, it is possible the Home Secretary may want to announce something beforehand. Our priorities remain legal representation and removing the scheme from the Home Office. I suggest we support the call for reviewing the scheme but emphasise the importance of implementing recommendations, rather than repeating past reviews. A Windrush Commissioner could play a vital role in prioritising these recommendations through a quick and public process.

To ensure that your input is included in tomorrow’s meeting, please take a moment to fill out THIS FORM with your short but sweet answers to the above questions by 11am on October 24th.

WJC representatives, along with Jeremy (Action for Race Equality CEO)Nicola Burgess (Greater Manchester Immigration Aid Unit), and potentially Patrick Vernon, will be attending. We want to ensure that your views are fully represented, so your input is invaluable.

Thank you for your ongoing support, and I look forward to hearing your thoughts.
